Some universities...connect to employment

The highlight of my day today was meeting with staff of Career Resources at Georgetown Public Policy Institute (GPPI). Jennifer and Amanda made a great job in showing what does it mean to be a young professional studying and seeking employment in D.C. The notions which are pretty exotic to an international student.

You thought you were well prapared? They will make you fabulously prepared.
You thought you knew the job search? They will give you a handfull of resources you had no idea about.
You thought you were quick enough? They will tell you that 400 applicants were quicker.

My conclusions from these sessions are:
- have your 1 page resume ready in at least 50 versions (interessted in policy? keep resume that would fit jobs from fishery to pharmaceutics)
- the employer never sleeps. Stay awake. Be prepared. Buy a suit.
- figure out how to write an outstanding and perfectly standarized resume at the same time
- know your potential employer. google them, learn them, love them
- google yourself, before they google you
- if you haven't prepared you "elevator speech" yet, check the elevator before you enter. You don't want to end up meeting Bill Gates and have nothing to say.

And being serious now, GPPI has some wonderful resources for students and alumni:
- a database of job posts directed to MPP students! (Love it!!!)
- a database of MPP alumni, their current employer and their cell phone
- employment events: alumni, employers, workshops

Employers come to Public Polic Institute and say they want to employ students? I think I am in a paradise :)

Thank you Jennifer & Amanda!
